Shakked Dabran, a doctoral student, has been awarded the prestigious ESERA Travel Awards 2023. As a result, she was granted an opportunity to participate in a large interdisciplinary research project on the influence of social media on climate change hosted at the Institute for Science Education in Hanover (www.someclics.com). During her stay, she collaborated with Dr. Alexander Büssing, Soraya Kresin, and Rebecca Kunze to conduct a comparative study examining which criteria are more effective in identifying misinformation online in English, German, and Hebrew. As part of the study, they evaluated the search results for two common climate change conspiracy theory queries that appeared on the first three results pages of Google. They found that the importance of understanding what scientific consensus is, the importance of lateral reading, and the importance of critical evaluation are essential when dealing with misinformation in the online space. However, they also discovered that language differences may affect people’s abilities to critically interact with information, even if they have information evaluation skills. For example, the author’s background was helpful in identifying misinformation in Hebrew and English, but not in German (in fact – we saw the opposite effect!). These findings were presented at a Leibniz University symposium on Social Media and Climate Change from the Perspective of Science Education. In addition, as part of the symposium, Shakked was a member of a panel discussion, which addressed important issues related to science education in an age characterized by social media and its effects.

Congratulations to Yael Rozenblum, a doctoral student, for winning a short scientific mission travel scholarship from COST, a European academic cooperation organization that focuses on argument analysis and public policy. During her visit, Yael collaborated with Prof. Stavros Assimakopoulos from the Department of Linguistics at the University of Malta, and together they developed a discourse analysis tool. This tool is part of Yael’s research that aims to investigate the development of scientific literacy among the public and the media during the Corona pandemic, and as part of it, changes in the scientific vocabulary of the public and the media are analyzed in Ynet and Shabbat Square.

פרופ’ אילת ברעם צברי מהפקולטה לחינוך למדע וטכנולוגיה אמרה: “הפרויקט מציע הזדמנות לדיאלוג. יש כאן אפשרות לדיאלוג בין ילדים ובין מומחים, שמספרים על מה שהם עושים. זו דרך הסתכלות יותר בריאה על חינוך מדעי ודרך מצוינת להנגיש מדע – לא רק את הידע המדעי הספציפי אלא את עצם הרעיון של ביקורת עמיתים. עכשיו צריך לחשוב איך מורים בכל הארץ יוכלו להנחות את הכיתות שלהם בסקירת המאמרים”.

בחודש הקודם התקיימה סדנת עבודה בלובן בלגיה במסגרת הפרויקט foodscienceclass של EIT FOOD בהובלתה של ד״ר קרן דליות. הסדנא, שנמשכה שלושה ימים, כללה בין היתר השתתפות בסדנת בישול במרכז קהילתי באנטוורפן עם כיתה המשתתפת בפרויקט במסגרתה בישלו המשתתפים ארוחת צהריים משאריות , סדנת אוריינות מדעית של הדוקטורנטית יעל רוזנבלום וסדנה בנושא תקשורת המדע שהועברה על ידי קרן ויעל.

ברכות לד״ר קרן דליות שהשתתפה בכנס של COST – ארגון שיתוף פעולה אקדמי אירופאי העוסק בניתוח טיעונים ומדיניות ציבורית באיטליה. ד״ר דליות הציגה את המחקר: Does having kids trump science? The role of science knowledge vs. individual’s interests in COVID-19 related dilemmas מהדוקטורט של יעל רוזנבלום בהנחייתה של פרופ׳ אילת ברעם צברי מקבוצת תקשורת המדע. ממצאי המחקר מצביעים על כך שאינטרסים אישיים, כמו הורות, ממלאים תפקיד משמעותי בתהליך קבלת ההחלטות של הציבור בדילמות מדעיות- חברתיות יותר מידע או רקע מדעי.

במסגרת הסדנא בהובלתן של ד״ר קרן דליות והדוקטורנטית יעל רוזנבלום, מקבוצת תקשורת המדע, נחשפו המשתתפים לפרויקט ‘מאיפה מגיע האוכל?‘, לחשיבות של שילוב נושאים בעלי הקשר לחיי היומיום של התלמידים בהוראה, הכירו כלים ורעיונות לעיסוק במזון ובקבלת החלטות מושכלת והתנסו בפרויקט
